Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are at increased risk for obesity, in comparison to typically developing children.
Marcus Autism Center is conducting a research study for children with autism and obesity. This study will test if an intervention called Changing Health in Autism through Nutrition, Getting fit and Expanding variety (CHANGE) helps children with obesity to lose weight, exercise more and eat healthier.
Who can participate?
Your child may be eligible if he or she:
- Is 5 to 12 years old.
- Is overweight.
- Is not on any medicine associated with significant weight gain or loss.
- Can come to Marcus Autism Center for regular appointments.
What is involved in participating?
As part of the study, you and your child will come to Marcus Autism Center for two initial visits. These visits include common tests of your child’s behavior, health and diagnosis. All children who qualify will be enrolled in the CHANGE program.
The program involves sessions with a therapist, parent and their child. These sessions will focus on teaching parents how to help their child be more physically active and eat healthier.
The CHANGE program involves 16 sessions over a 6 month period. Families will also come in periodically for visits where we will assess your child’s health and progress.
What are the benefits of participating?
All children enrolled will participate in the CHANGE program. Families will also receive $20 for three assessment visits for a total of up to $60.
