Genetic disorders are caused by alterations in the genetic code carried by deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), which is present in the nucleus of every cell in the body. Many genetic disorders are caused by mutations or changes in the sequence of DNA that are inherited, while others are not inherited. Down syndrome, a disorder producing mental retardation due to an extra copy of chromosome 21, is an example of a disorder that is genetic but not inherited. Max Brewer was diagnosed with a mild form of autism when he was 3. His older brother, Arthur, also has autism and completed the Marcus Autism Center Early Intervention Program. “We had seen such great progress with Arthur, so we knew that we needed to start Max in the program, too,” Max’s mother, Therese, said.
