Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is an approach to behavioral care that involves the translation of scientific principles to help with real-life problems. These approaches emphasize the use of the scientific method with directly observable behaviors to monitor the effects of treatments in real time while they are being used.
In this way, the treatment can not only be evaluated, but also repeated with different patients or situations to determine how widely it should be used. Training in behavior analysis historically has occurred as a specialty area within other disciplines, such as psychology, child development, education and speech pathology.
In the last two decades, however, ABA has begun to seek recognition as a discipline unto itself. This is reflected in accreditation for degree programs and board certification as a behavior analyst at the bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree level. Marcus Autism Center offers training options for each of these levels.
